Abidemi Otaiku is an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow in Neurology. In his latest study he looked at the link between bad dreams and dementia. By analysing data from US studies of health and aging, which included over 3000 people, he found out that frequent nightmares may be early signs of a cognitive decline, especially in men. Alternatively it is also possible that those dreams may be the cause of dementia. Even though it isn't certain if bad dreams cause or signal this syndrome it's still a very important study. Till this day we don't know much about dreams, why we have them or how our brain creates them. In my opinion his study could be an important step to help with earlier diagnoses of dementia and possible earlier interventions. It may also help with finding out more about dreaming in the near future. After all we spend about one third of our life asleep.
